This page compares six popular free word game apps on the facts that matter if you just want to play: the price, whether the free version shows ads, whether there are in-app purchases, which languages you can play in, and where the app runs. Every fact was checked on the App Store on 23 September 2026 and links to the listing it came from, so you can verify it yourself.

What the table doesn’t show

Dictionaries. The apps differ in which words they accept. UniWords checks English words against a dictionary powered by data from Oxford Languages and Danish words against a list based on Retskrivningsordbogen. Wordfeud and Lexulous let you choose between dictionaries; Scrabble GO and Words With Friends use their own lists.

Cross-platform play. UniWords is the only app in the table that also runs in a normal web browser at play.uniwords.io, with the same account and games as the iOS and Android apps.

How the free apps make money. Five of the six apps are free to download but earn money from ads and in-app purchases: coin packs, premium upgrades, season passes or subscriptions. UniWords sells nothing in the game. It is built by a small Danish studio, Axel Software ApS, and is currently financed by its founders.

Frequently asked questions

Which word game apps support Danish?

Two of the six: Wordfeud (10 dictionaries including Danish) and UniWords (English and Danish, with the Danish word list based on Retskrivningsordbogen).

Is UniWords really free?

Yes. UniWords is free on iOS, Android and in the browser, with no ads, nothing to buy in the game and no subscription. It is made by Axel Software ApS in Copenhagen, and its English word list is powered by data from Oxford Languages.
