UniWords Live mode and Cosmo the practice coach are now available. Live mode is a real-time game you play in one go, with 30 seconds per turn. Cosmo is a robot coach who plays against you in practice games and gives you hints. UniWords is a free word game with no ads, where you build words with letter tiles on a board against an opponent, in English or Danish. Both features are in version 3.2.5 on iPhone, iPad, Android and at play.uniwords.io, and there is still nothing to buy in the game.

UniWords Live mode with 30 seconds per turn and Cosmo the practice coach, on iPhone, iPad, Android and web

Live mode: a whole game in one go

Live mode arrived in September 2026. Open New game and tap Live at the top. The first time, a short rules summary appears; tap Got it. Then pick English or Danish and a board (Classic or Random), tap OK, and the app starts searching for an opponent. Keep the app open while it searches. Once you are paired with an opponent, a short countdown runs and the game begins.

  • The clock. 30 seconds for every turn. Your clock only runs on your turn.
  • If time runs out. Once a game is under way, a turn that runs out is passed for you. Currently, 3 such turns in a row lose you the game.
  • If you leave. Leaving a game counts as a loss and currently pauses Live mode for 5 minutes. Leave again the same day and the pause grows.
  • Rating and leaderboard. Live games have their own rating, separate from classic turn-based games. On the Top 50 screen, switch from Classic to Live; you currently need an account and 5 finished live games to appear there.
  • Playing a friend. Live games currently start with a search for an opponent. To play a particular friend, tap Friends on the New game screen for a classic game.

Meet Cosmo, your practice coach

Cosmo is new in version 3.2.5, released on 1 October 2026. Open New game, tap Practice, choose a language and a board type, and tap Start game. Practice is its own tile, separate from Play vs AI, with no difficulty level to pick. If you have a practice game going, the tile reopens it.

On your turn, tap Hint. On most turns his tips appear over the board in three steps:

  • Hint 1 of 3. What a move is worth.
  • Hint 2 of 3. Where to look: part of the board lights up.
  • Hint 3 of 3. Which letters it uses.

If your letters are hard to use, he suggests which ones to swap instead. Cosmo never gives you the word before you play, and hints cost nothing.

When you press Play, Cosmo first tells you what your move is worth and whether a higher-scoring move exists. If one does, choose Try again to keep looking, or Play it to go ahead. Afterwards he shows the highest-scoring move, and he can explain his own moves.

When the game ends you get a Practice report: hints used, best moves found, your best move and your biggest missed chance. Practice games do not count towards your rating, statistics, trophies or leaderboards.

Still free, no ads, nothing to buy

Live mode and Cosmo are part of the same free game, with no ads and nothing to buy in the game. Here is what completely free means in UniWords.

Where to get it

You can currently try live games and Practice as a guest. Play free in your browser, or get the app on the App Store or Google Play. The same links are on our download page, and there are more answers in the UniWords FAQ.
